KAREN RYKER (Professor in Voice and Acting):
BA Clarke College, MA University of Michigan, MFA Brandeis
University. Additional training with Shakespeare and Co.,
Grotowskis Polish Lab Theatre, La Mama E.T.C., and in the
Linklater, Berry, and Fitzmaurice vocal techniques. Karen
came to us from the University of Wisconsin-Madison where
she served as Head of Voice and Speech and director of the
MFA Acting Program. She taught previously at Notre Dame, The
University of Texas, Clarke College, St. Edward's University,
Brandeis University. Professional voice/text coaching credits
include Berkshire Theatre Festival, Illinois Shakespeare Festival,
American Players Theatre, Madison Repertory Theatre; acting
or directing credits include Shakespeare and Co., The Huntington
Theatre, Lyric Stage, Madison Repertory Theatre, La Mama ETC
and industrial/commercial work in radio, television and film.
Her articles on Shakespearean performance and on methods for
protecting actors' voices during scenes involving "vocal
violence" have been published in The Journal of Voice,
The Voice and Speech Review and The Complete Voice and Speech
Workout Book. Karen served on the board of the Voice and Speech
Trainers Association and edits the Reviews Section of The
Voice and Speech Review. She is a member of Actors Equity
Association and of The Voice Foundation. |
