Helene Kvale
Assistant Professor of Acting for the Camera, Shakespeare

 

 

 

Helene joined the Department of Dramatic Arts in September 2004. She teaches Shakespeare, Moliere and Shaw and Acting for the Camera in the BFA acting program. This season she is directing Thornton Wilder’s “The Skin of Our Teeth” for the Connecticut Repertory Theatre. Directing credits for the Studio Theatre include “The Gut Girls” (2005) and “Marat Sade” (2006). She assisted Gary English on “Julius Caesar”in the Nafe Katter Theatre (2005). Helene is alumna of the Lincoln Center Theatre Directors Lab (2007) and the artistic director of Bated Breath Theatre Company.

Acting Training: Pomona College, CA; The London School of Economics (BSC Hons Anthropology); Post grad: The Drama Studio, London; National Theatre Studio, London.

Prior to coming to UConn, Helene was based in London, England. There she acted in numerous award winning productions in theatre, television, radio, commercials, and film. She has also worked as a presenter and voice-over artist.

For the National Theatre: King Lear, Richard III, Napoli Milionaria, Gitta’s Attonement, Shift.

 

For the West End: Burning Blue, Life During Wartime, To Kill A Mockingbird.

 

Other UK theatre work includes: The Secret Rapture, Roman and Marys, Diary of Anne Frank, Getting Out, Brand, Canadian Gothic, Sexual Perversity in Chicago.

 

TV: Helene has appeared in over 20 television dramas, including as a regular in Soldier Soldier, London Bridge and The Bill. She is best known in this country for her work in Prime Suspect 4, This Life, Deceit and Lovejoy.

 

Film: Tomorrow la Scala! , Talk and 5:45.

 

Teaching: 1998-2002 Academy of Creative Training, UK; 1999-2002 Diverse Acts; 1990- 1995 Interact (National Theatre Outreach Program).
In addition to her own screenwriting work, Helene has been script advisor on several features.

Helene Kvale is a founding member of Bated Breath Theatre Company. Check out their latest work The Parkville Project, funded by The Greater Hartford Arts Council and the School of Fine Arts Deans Grant and scheduled for full production in 2010.
