Al Crawford – (Lecturer in Lighting Design) has worked as a lighting designer extensively in many areas of the visual and performing arts including dance, theater, opera, social events and themed entertainment. He is enjoying his thirteenth season as the Lighting Director for the Alvin Ailey ® American Dance Theater and also designs extensively for the company. He has also toured all over the globe with the company and been to 48 states and over 62 countries. He has designed numerous high profile works for companies worldwide such as Judith Jamison's Love Stories with Rennie Harris and Robert Battle, Double Exposure for the Lincoln Center Festival and scenic and lighting designs for HERE...NOW, a work commissioned by the Cultural Olympiad at the Salt Lake City Olympic Winter Games.
Al also enjoys designing projects such as social events, live music concerts and architectural installations. Clients include companies such as Jazz at Lincoln Center, XM Radio, the New Jersey Performing Arts Center, and David Monn LLC. Al recently designed the White House State Dinner honoring the President of Mexico.
Al is on the faculty of the University of Connecticut School of Fine Arts and teaches classes on stage and event lighting design. He has recently been appointed to the selection committee of the Gilbert Helmsley Lighting Internship program.
Al is the President of the Board of Directors of HopeBoykinDance as well as a board member of The New Jersey Youth Theater. He is a member of United Scenic Artists Local 829 and the International Alliance for Theatrical Stage Employees Local 635.
