Choice: There is no single road to a successful
career in theatre. The materials in the brochure will introduce
a wide range of degree programs from which you may choose the
path that is best suited for you. On the undergraduate level,
the department offers four separate undergraduate degree programs:
the Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) in Acting, the BFA in Design/Tech,
and the BFA in Puppetry, as well as the Bachelor of Arts (BA)
in Theatre Studies. On the graduate level, Master of Fine Arts
(MFA) degrees are available in Acting, Design (Scenic, Costume,
or Lighting), Technical Direction, and Puppetry. In addition,
Master of Arts (MA) programs are available in Production (with
emphases to be chosen from Costume or Puppetry).
Contacts: Making contacts, networking with
lots of different people, staying in touch--these will be vital
elements in your career, and you can start that process here
at the University of Connecticut. Besides the faculty and students
with whom you will work in the department, you'll have the opportunities
to work with the many Professional Guest Artists who are regularly
engaged to fill major artistic roles as actors, directors, designers,
and stage managers with CRT. In addition, the department regularly
hosts a Colloquium Series which features leading professional
actors, directors, designers, and puppeteers from around the
country and the world who come to campus to speak about their
art and craft, critique student work and share their professional
experiences.
Challenge: Who was it that once said, "Only
the strong survive"? Most likely it was a theatre person!
But no one in the world of theatre becomes a survivor without
challenges. Your challenge begins with your application to
join our program, but it doesn't end there. Our curricula
and degree programs stress the development of fundamental
skills that every theatre artist must have. At the same time,
they provide the discipline and rigor for advanced study and
performance at both the undergraduate and graduate levels.
Then, there is the constant challenge of testing the skills
you've cultivated in the classroom in the actual public performance
and production with the Connecticut Repertory Theatre.
Commitment: As your friends have probably
reminded you, a career in theatre is not an easy proposition.
But despite what anyone says, you know you have a deep sense
of commitment developing within you. We share that commitment.
At the University of Connecticut, our students are our first
priority. Our faculty of more than twenty-two outstanding
directors, designers, technical directors, puppeteers, performers,
scholars, and educators provide a unique and stimulating environment
for study, training, performance, and production in the dramatic
arts. The faculty shares not only a lifetime's devotion to
the art of theatre but also a lifelong commitment to the education
and training of young theatre artists. Our small class size
helps assure that the unique talents and individual needs
of our students can be given careful attention by the faculty.
